Sugar & Spice Portsmouth is a playful architectural project, organised by Sustainable Conservation Trust and supported by The National Lottery Community Fund, that turns familiar Portsmouth buildings into edible-inspired models — and sparks a big conversation about heritage, reuse, and the future of our city.

Created by young architecture enthusiasts from local schools and the University of Portsmouth, this joyful project reimagines the city in a way that’s colourful, creative, and open to everyone — not just architects. ​

Aim: Reuse Recipe
Sugar & Spice aims to look differently at Portsmouth’s existing buildings and spaces, recognising their environmental, cultural, and social value. By protecting, repairing, adapting, and reusing what is already here, the project explores how overlooked buildings can become worthwhile spaces for the future.

Rather than replacing what exists, Sugar & Spice asks how Portsmouth’s existing fabric can be reimagined - retaining the character, memories, and materials that make the city distinctive while reducing the environmental impact of new construction.
​
Like a recipe passed down and adapted over time, the project sees Portsmouth as something to build on, not start again.​
