Conserving the Past, Inspiring the Future:

The Living Power of Heritage

Zeynep Unal

Cultural heritage and memory, like two intertwined branches, form a bridge between the past and the future. Carefully sculpted from societal values, cultural heritage encompasses more than religious landmarks or centuries-old buildings that stand as silent witnesses to time, forming the backdrop of countless photographs and paintings. It is also embedded in our language, rituals, and the wisdom passed down through generations— such as the traditional lullaby on Indonesia's Simeulue Island that teaches locals from childhood to seek higher ground after an earthquake, a lesson that saved many lives during the tsunami that struck the island in 2004.

Heritage is not merely what we inherit from the past; it is also what we actively shape in the present. It is the essence of what we choose to preserve and protect, ensuring it becomes a legacy for future generations. This living heritage is woven into our collective memory, serving as a reminder of our history, a guide from our ancestors, and a wellspring of inspiration for those yet to come."
