As part of Sugar & Spice, we explored how physical making can connect with digital storytelling. Led by artist Harry Payne, the RFID workshop introduced students and members of the public to a simple technology that can link a physical object to digital content. Using just a smartphone and a small RFID tag, participants learned how to programme objects to reveal hidden layers of information, images and stories.

The workshop also became part of the Sugar & Spice exhibition. RFID tags were attached to the students’ work, allowing visitors to use their phones to discover LiDAR scans of the models and see the projects in a different way. The technology created a quiet connection between the physical and digital, extending the stories held within each object beyond what could be seen in the exhibition itself.
