As part of this year’s Heritage Open Day celebrations, SCT brought Fort Brockhurst’s northern quarter to life with a captivating fusion of art, architecture and heritage.
Visitors stepping into the Keep were treated to a powerful sensory experience as five artists transformed its network of tiny rooms, hidden nooks and winding passageways into immersive art installations. Pieces responded to the unique character of the space, reimagining the historic building in dynamic and thought-provoking ways.
Artist Kathy Williams described her process: “It was an incredible treat to be asked to respond to the space of the Keep at Fort Brockhurst. The space alone is incredible — unique, beautiful and to be cherished. I focused on the architecture: the vaulted overlapping ceilings, the curved linking passageways, and the texture of old crumbling brick walls.”

Fellow artist Sally Tyrie shared how the project pushed her creative boundaries: “This was such a rewarding project for me, especially in terms of extending my practice by exploring cyanotype on fabric and re-engaging with embroidery. I learned so much about what works and what doesn’t when creating site-based installations. I absolutely loved working from this site. I’ll definitely be seeking out other spaces just as rich in history.”

In addition to the artistic elements, visitors had the opportunity to explore SCT’s wider projects and gain insights into the importance of preserving and sustainably reusing historic and culturally significant buildings, a mission that breathes new life into the past while looking firmly toward the future.
