Mapping the City and the Sea

Lecture by Dr. Dominic Fantana

Time & Location

21 Nov 2026, 13:00 – 15:00

SCT, Old Pay Office, Historic Dockyard, Portsmouth, UK

About the event

This session will journey through a rich visual archive ranging from rare manuscript maps dating from 1545, 1552, 1570, and 1584, to striking detail images from the Cowdray Engraving capturing the dramatic sinking of the Mary Rose. We will also examine later Solent charts and maps from c. 1590 to the 1760s, alongside evocative 18th-century landscape paintings of the town.

Together, these historical maps, charts, and artworks will offer a unique "feel" for Portsmouth's evolving landscape and maritime heritage across time.
