About the event
The programme will explore an art and the creative process to connect participants with their
Heritage and identity using iconic heritage buildings here in Portsmouth’s Historic Dockyard.
Portsmouth is often described as a Marmite place: you either love it or hate it. This programme will invite participants to explore what they love about Portsmouth and why, what makes them feel proud to be connected to the city, and what they might see differently once they look more closely. We will consider uniqueness as a concept: the city’s uniqueness, the uniqueness of its buildings, and the participants’ own identity and creative voice.
Through a series of workshops, experimenting, collaborating and making, participants will be introduced to accessible creative, digital and heritage skills. The programme will include photography, architectural recording, digital making, clay tile or small heritage component making, and a group bamboo structure build inspired by buildings and details recorded during the week.
The week will build towards a participant-led exhibition, using original dockyard toolboxes as display cases. Participants will curate their own work, design posters and develop invitations for friends and family to celebrate their achievements.
The programme will also connect to SCT’s Portsmouth 100 Buildings project. Participants will be introduced to existing material gathered through the project and will be invited to use this as inspiration. Their own observations, recordings and creative responses may also feed into the wider Portsmouth 100 Buildings work, helping to capture how young people see and value the city’s built heritage.
