Art Installations
Launched 24th November 2023
Piano Lane
by Alice Hume & Helena Heath
Alice and Helena’s installation is a captivating blend of historical references and artistic innovation.
Utilizing discarded sail cloth, a nod to the area's nautical heritage, they have transformed this material into an integral part of their mural. The fabric is thoughtfully attached and wraps around existing metal conduits at a high level in the alley, creating a dynamic interaction between the artwork and its urban environment.
The installations also feature strong female characters, such as butcher and shoemaker, who historically worked in these alleys. The Singer sewing machine and an assortment of fruits, painted by Helena, pay homage to local trades and businesses.
Hobbs Passage
by Clarke Reynolds & Bricksy
Clarke and Bricksy's installation presents a playful and imaginative scene. Picture a box tipped over, spilling out a variety of objects: a wooden train complete with a coal truck and two passenger carts, a tennis ball, a Furby, a retro robot, a toy soldier, and a submarine.
These elements are creatively mingled with 100 building blocks. What makes these blocks unique is their design. Instead of traditional letters, each block features braille. This includes the entire alphabet and a short, Gosport - themed nursery rhyme. The rhyme playfully alters the name ‘Gosport,’ with lines like “Geese fly in gooseport,” “Priest fell in godsport,” and a whimsical observation that “People forget D in Gosport.”
Vigar's Yard
by Thomas Buckley & Matt Reed
Vigar's Yard
by Thomas Buckley & Matt Reed
Thomas and Matt have created an installation that beautifully intertwines Gosport’s history with cutting-edge technology. Their inspiration stems from the legacy of Mumby’s mineral water, a source of local pride and historically served at the king’s table.
This heritage sparked their concept of a “message in a bottle,” exploring the memories of local residents and the memories they would encapsulate in their own bottles.
Dissolution
by Samo & Erin Keen
Samo and Erin, in their collaborative mural project by St Mary’s Catholic Church, explore deep themes of identity and introspection. This installation marks a significant step for Erin, a Gosport-born artist known for her scale work, as she ventures into her first mural creation which was mentored by Samo.
Their artwork delves into the relationship between self and environment. Samo’s contribution, uniquely positioned in relation to Erin’s work, offers viewers a chance to reflect on the interplay of external and internal perspectives. The mural encourages onlookers not just to look inward at their own sense of self, but also to consider how they engage with the world around them.
